Sirena had slept in until check out time at her hotel on the western outskirts of Helsinki, then drove west in the rental Saab some one hundred sixty kilometers to the Finnish coastal city of Turku, or, as she soon learned, Abo, the Finnish name for the city. It was an industrial port city with hundreds of tiny islands that stretched out across the ocean, dividing the Baltic from the Gulf of Bothnia, nearly the entire way to Stockholm, Sweden.

Thinking back to her contact in Copenhagen, Sirena now understood what the man had meant by “the Abo men would kill him.” He had meant the men from Abo or Turku, Finland. Why had their analysts not figured that out? It didn’t matter, though. She just needed to find out why the Finns wanted to kidnap Karen Hedlund, and how they were involved with these worldwide explosions. Were those two events related? Had to be. She didn’t believe in coincidences like that.

She had gotten the address of the explosion downloaded to her PDA, along with a map and directions, which led her now to the large house on the northern flank of Turku, an area of old houses in partial disrepair. The place could use a face lift, Sirena thought, pulling over to the curb. Police tape stretched along the front of the yard, which extended some sixty meters up a long hill and was bordered on three sides by tall pines that looked like they had been nuked, their limbs hanging down and branches ripped back, leaving splotches of white underbelly and seeping sap. The trees, she noticed, had protected the houses on either side, even though they were set back a great distance. As far as she could see, the outer forest butted up against the back yard. Across the street was a long, wide park with children’s play equipment that appeared not to get any use.

This afternoon the rain fell in a steady flow, the drops tinkling against the metal and glass of the Saab. So this had been the home of Seppo Aho, she thought, one of the men she had shot in New Mexico. Actually, according to her intel, it was rented by brothers Seppo and Paavo Aho. Owned by a local industrialist with a dubious background. A Russian Finn. But who had blown it up? And why?

She pulled out her cell phone and punched in a long number, waiting for an answer.

Finally, a woman’s voice picked up. “Bulldog.” Nothing else.

Sirena paused, linking the code name with that tall Air Force captain; she was hot enough to make her question her own heterosexuality. Having been in the game for a long time, and having just started using a new code name, they all seemed to be jumbling in Sirena’s mind now. “Dragon,” she said. “I’m at the site in Turku. What kind of inspection does your boss want?”

Pause. “We’ve already got SAT shots, but we can’t determine the type of explosion from them. If you can get in close, take some cell shots and send them to us, that would help.
